Shopping Healthy On A Budget

There are SO many things that I’d rather spend my money on than food. Like cute workout outfits, more kitties… ok I’m just kidding about the more kitties. 3 is definitely enough for us.

People often ask me how much I’m spending on groceries each week (assuming that I spend a ton because I’m a health nut). My answer is $100-$120/week. So Around $50-$60/person a week. That’s CHEAP… we could easily spend that on a nice dinner out somewhere which is crazy! We haven’t always been good about keeping the grocery bill low, but with trial and error we’ve figured that this amount is do-able for us to survive on without feeling like we’re going to eat our fingers off.

But, grocery shopping is BORING and can be expensive! So here’s how our routine goes. I’m usually dragging Kenny with me to make it more fun. And we make it into a game! We see how low we can make our bill each time! So we each fill the cart with NEEDS and WANTS (ALL HEALTHY ITEMS). Then before we check out we go through our items again and see how much of the ‘WANTS’ we REALLY NEED.

Here’s how we keep the budget to $100-$120 for 2 people!

We shop at Aldi for our produce! Seriously, going here has been a game changer for us. They even have cheaper organic items which is awesome! We get all of our veggies, fruits, nuts, eggs, frozen items, etc. here. Usually costs about $70-$80 (food items only). Yes, these items can go bad quicker, but we freeze the items that we can, and we normally use everything else before it goes bad. Then we will shop at either Schnucks, Meijer or Harvest Market for our meats (we just trust their quality of meat, and meat quality is important to us.) For our meat we will usually buy a couple servings of fish (fish is my favorite!), a whole turkey or chicken (we can eat off of for lunches or a quick dinner for the week), turkey sausages and burgers. It varies what we get, but you get the general idea.

And that’s it! We keep it pretty simple and fun! We don’t do anything fancy! We save fancy for special occasions 🙂

Do you grocery shop on a budget so you can spend more on more important things like cute clothes?! How much do you spend on groceries each week and how do you do it?!
